Limbo

No doubt there are times in everyone's lives they find themselves in some sort of limbo. Some people handle this supurbly (spelling?) & seem to live their lives transiently. My hat goes off to them. Others handle it, but don't necessarily like it. And then there are those who don't handle it at all. Ok. So I'm not a complete drama queen, I'm the middle one. I hate being in limbo, but I don't fall to pieces over it.

We are renovating. Over the last 12 months we have been plugging away, room by room. The spunky Mr. H is a chippy so we are doing it ourselves.  And yes, doing it ourselves & having a tradey hubby, it's a bit slow. Mr. H is the foreman & I'm the apprentice, and I have inherited Mr. H's old nail belt - a sexy accessory! So far we have redone our bedroom & The Squeeze & Bear's bedroom, built a new bathroom & back verandah, & relocated the laundry to the shed. They all look great. We have discovered a few things along the way. I am useless on a roller but quite handy on a paintbrush. I can use a nailgun, & my skills with a cordless drill are progressing - slowly! There are a few ground rules. I trust Mr. H with any decisions regarding construction so long as he trusts me with any decisions regarding decor. I think I got the better end of the stick!! Wolf whistling is encouraged! We seem to work well together on the "construction site" but ask me again in a few weeks & I might say the wolf whistles have waned!

The pace is about to accelerate & things are going to get messy!! Walls are getting knocked out, a new kitchen is going in, getting rid of the masonite, insullating, new plaster, rewiring, plumbing, paint, etc!!!!!! The kitchen, dining room & lounge room are getting a makeover. So we are moving out for the next 3 weeks, but I feel like we may as well be moving house completely. Hence, the limbo. We are lucky enough to have gorgeous friends (we have lots of those!) who have offered us a furnished house to stay in.

I can hear some of you say: "Oh shut up & stop whinging. There are plenty of people who would love to renovate their house!" And, I agree with you. I am lucky (& to have a hubby who can do it for us). My Mum has been waiting 11 years to get a new kitchen & her need is greater than mine! She is green with envy. But, as a dear friend said to me yesterday, whinging is all relative! So I will vent my whinge & then get on with it.

If you are going to renovate, don't do it in winter! We live near the Victorian high country & our winters are pretty chilly ("And you don't have insullation?" I know!). We rarely get snow, but we do get sleet. Our fogs lift for only an hour or two, the frosts are thick, & this winter has been particularly wet. We had hoped to be finished with the renos by now but it was not to be. Having said that, the last 3 days have been glorious. Packing up half a house & relocating 3 weeks worth of necessities whilst working night duty isn't ideal either. Achieving everything I need to before going to bed is a challenge & needless to say there are a lot of half-done jobs around the house (typical nature for me!). One plus is that it's school holidays at the end of the week & The Squeeze & The Bear are off for various sleep-overs with rellies.

Once we move out, I'll be right. I'll be able to slow down a bit & "find my centre" & pretend to be normal. And, I am looking forward to making a mess. I've told my mates if they want to punch a hole in a wall, come to my place. Demolition party!! BYO jimmy bar.

  1. Whinge away, it's your blog, you can say what you like. It all balances out anyway and I'll bet you felt better after writing that.
